Cincinnati Bengals defense tackle DJ Reader joins us today In the Trenches with Dave Lapham. DJ tells us why he thinks the Bengals' defense is the most underrated in the NFL.
DJ is coming off two phenomenal seasons with the Bengals being their anchor on the defense line. The Bengals are a different defense when DJ is not on the field, going from one of the best defenses against the run to one of the worst. DJ is hoping to have one of the best and healthiest seasons of his career and it's not only an important season for the Bengals but also for DJ who is in the final year of his contract with the Bengals. The 2023 Bengals defense has some turnover from last season, losing both safeties in free agency and it will be the biggest question mark to start the season. DJ and the rest of the defense are very confident though saying this unit has the potential to be even better than they were in the last two seasons.
We want to thank DJ for joining us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham brought to you by First Star Logistics, as he is one of our favorite guests to talk to. We also look forward to growing our new central channel, First Star Media Group, and having you fans follow us along the ride. Cincinnati Bengals right tackle Jonah Williams joins us for a one-on-one interview on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham. Jonah joins us a week before the season to talk about the high expectations set by the team heading into this huge season for the Cincinnati Bengals.
Jonah has had an eventful offseason, to say the least. In our interview, Jonah goes into a great deal about how this offseason has been the hardest of his career. To start the offseason Jonah was rehabbing a very serious knee injury he suffered against the Ravens at the end of the season. Then after the Bengals surprisingly signed left tackle Orlando Brown Jr, Jonah didn't know what the plan was for him on the team so he thought the best decision for himself was to ask for a trade knowing that the 2023 season was his last on his current contract with the Bengals. Flash forward to training camp and Jonah has come full circle, reporting on time and accepting his new role as the right tackle for the Bengals. The vibes seem to be extremely high for this new offense line and Jonah and company can't wait to get the party started on September 10th against the Cleveland Browns.
We want to thank Jonah for joining us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham brought to you by First Star Logistics. e also look forward to growing our new central channel, First Star Media Group, and having you fans follow us along the ride. Friday Aug 25, 2023
Cincinnati Bengals Special Teams Coach Darrin Simmons returns to In the Trenches with Dave Lapham to give us his final Bengals 2023 preview before the season starts on September 10th.
Coach Simmons has had an exciting training camp with the first true punter battle he has had in quite some time, with Kevin Huber being the Bengals punter for over 10 seasons. There are also battles for other spots on the special team units like gunner for the punt team and the return man for both punts and kickoffs. It will be interesting to see who makes the roster and who will just be special team players like Stanley Morgan has been for the past couple of seasons. Will an unexpected rookie not make the team because he doesn't play special teams or will a surprise undrafted player make it because he does? Everything will be answered by Tuesday when the Bengals roster is cut to 53 players right in time for the season opener against the Clevland Browns.
We hope you fans really enjoy this episode of In the Trenches with Dave Lapham brought to you by First Star Logistics and we can't wait for the season to start in just two short weeks! Cincinnati Bengals QB coach Dan Pitcher joins us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham to talk about Joe Burrow's health and the progress of the backup QBs.
The biggest question right now surrounding the Bengals is the health and timetable for Joe Burrow. Joe did come out to the joint practice against the Green Bay Packers on Wednesday but didn't participate in any drills as he just watched the offense. The offense did struggle against the Packers and it was obvious that without Joe the offense just isn't up to par, especially against a good defense like the Packers. Right now it seems that Trevor Sieman is the direct backup to Joe making him first string in practice and the starter in Week 1 if Joe isn't able to play. As we are a month away from the season it will interesting to see how this QB room folds out when Week 1 comes around on September 10th.
We can't wait to see all the young players and depth players play against the Green Bay Packers on Friday in the Bengals first preseason game. We hope you fans really enjoy this episode of In the Trenches with Dave Lapham brought to you by First Star Logistics. Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver coach Troy Walters joins us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham, to discuss how the Bengals wide receivers have been dominating in training camp.
Coach Walters and Dave talk about the dominance of the big three in Jamarr Chase, Tee Higgins, and Tyler Boyd. In their third year together they are expected to dominate and they look ready for the regular season. The surprises at camp have been "The Other Guys" like Trent Irwin and Andrei Iosivas, they've been excelling in practice against NFL competition. For Irwin, it isn't the biggest surprise since he played a big part at wide receiver last season when Jamarr Chase was out of the lineup. For Iosivas it's a great start to his career being one of the biggest surprises at camp, Walters says in our interview that Andrei is well ahead of what they thought he would be at during training camp.
We can't wait to see all the young players and depth players play against the Green Bay Packers on Friday in the Bengals first preseason game. We hope you enjoyed this episode of In the Trenches with Dave Lapham brought to you by First Star Logistics. Cincinnati Bengals defense backs coach Chuck Burks joins us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham. Coach Burks has made a big impact on this team in such a short time, just joining the team last season but you can clearly see the effects on the field. Last season starting cornerback Chidobe Awuzie went down with an ACL tear and the DB room was stretched thin but even with their top corner out the room didn't miss a beat in the games and even excelled their game the later the season went on. A key contributor to that success was 2nd year player and rookie last season Cam Taylor Britt. Coach Burks has nothing but high praise for the young DB and truly believes Taylor Britt can become one of the premier corners in the NFL. A big change you will see for the Bengal's corners this season is the departure of Eli Apple. Apple signed with Miami just a few weeks ago but the Bengals reloaded on the position this offseason with drafting DJ Turner in the 2nd round and DJ Ivey in the 7th round of the NFL draft. Coach Burks has high praises for both but Turner is the rookie who is turning heads at training camp making a number of great plays against the best wide receiver group in the NFL. We hope you fans really enjoy this episode of In the Trenches with Dave Lapham and Chuck Burks brought to you by First Star Logistics. Cincinnati Bengals director of personnel Duke Tobin joins us today on this episode of In the Trenches with Dave Lapham. Duke highlights a lot of the offseason storylines and why he thinks the 2023 Bengals are ready for the Super Bowl.
Duke like all of us is extremely excited about this team and can't wait for the season to get started. The Bengals open the regular season against the Clevland Browns on September 10th but the biggest question for Week 1 is the health of QB Joe Burrow. Everything that has been said points to Joe being ready in week one but there is always cause for concern when one of the best players in the NFL has a noncontact injury. Lap tries to push Duke on when the inevitable contract extension will take place but of course, Duke didn't bite. Duke also talks about his thought process behind signing these key free agents and how they will help the Bengals get over the edge in 2023.
