Cincinnati Bengals assistant head coach and special teams coordinator Darrin Simmons joins us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham. Coach Simmons and Dave talk about the first two games and a preview of the Bengals Monday night matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.
While the Bengals offensively have had a rough start to the season the Bengals special teams play has been stellar. The special teams actually scored the first touchdown of the season when rookie Charlie Jones returned a punt for a touchdown in the second quarter against the Ravens. It was the first touchdown on a punt return for the Bengals since Adam Jones so it was very exciting to see and it's encouraging to see Jones make such an impact in his second career game. Brad Robbins has been up and down so far in his first two games but certain punts have definitely shown why the Bengals drafted him in the 6th round of this year's draft. Hopefully, the special teams' success continues during the season as the offense starts to come alive as well.
We want to thank Coach Simmons for always coming on with us on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham brought to you by First Star Logistics. Cincinnati Bengals linebackers coach James Bettcher joins us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham. Bettcher joined us in the show right before the week 1 game against the Browns so sadly it isn't as up-to-date as our recent content but it is a great interview about not only the Bengals underrated linebackers but the defense as a whole.

University of Connecticut head men's basketball coach Dan Hurley joins us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham. Dan is a surprise Bengals fan and he has been his whole life, he tells us how he fell in love with the Bengals as a kid and how it has grown over the years.
Dan and Lap not only talk about their love of the Bengals but Dan's love of the game of basketball. Dan's whole life has been centered around basketball with his dad, Bob Hurley winning 26 state championships at St. Anthony High School in Jersey City, New Jersey. Bob is a coaching legend in the state of New Jersey and both his sons have gone on to be great coaches of their own on the collegiate level. Dan's brother Bobby Hurley is one of the greatest point guards in Duke's history winning two national champions as a player and now has been the head coach at Arizona State since 2015. Dan while never being quite the player his brother was has proved to be a phenomenal college coach winning the national championship in 2022 and a dominant fashion as well. A four-seed coming into the tournament UCONN looked amazing in every postseason game and with the tournament filled with upsets UCONN never had a scare of their own on their way to their fifth national championship.
We want to thank Dan for joining us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham brought to you by First Star Logistics, we loved having his passionate personality on the show and hope he can join us again later on in the season!

With the Baltimore Ravens seeming to control time of possession all day Sunday afternoon in Paycor Stadium against the Cincinnati Bengals, it's hard to believe the Bengals only lost by three points, 27-24, against the AFC North rival.
Outside of some magic by rookie wide receiver Charlie Jones when he raced 81 yards on a punt return for his first NFL touchdown, things looked bleak for the home team as the Bengals offense continued their struggles from Week One.
But the Ravens didn't set the world on fire and only held a 13-10 advantage at the half after Evan McPherson and Justin Tucker traded field goals.
The tide looked to be changing for the Bengals as Joe Burrow started to find his groove, getting the Bengals in the RedZone before throwing an interception, killing the drive that Lamar Jackson turned into points, and hitting a deep pass to receiver Zay Flowers before finding his favorite receiver, tight end Mark Andrews for a touchdown and 20-10 advantage.
Burrow and the Bengals' offense would answer with a drive that included a pass interference against the Ravens, putting the Bengals on the four-yard line. After a short run by Joe Mixon and an incomplete pass to Tyler Boyd, Burrow would find Tee Higgins for the first of two touchdowns on the day, cutting the score to 20-17.
The Ravens answered with a touchdown drive in the fourth quarter, pushing the score to 27-17, and Burrow and company would put together their most impressive drive of the season, going 16 plays for 80 yards, ending in Higgins's second touchdown on the day closing the gap to 27-24 with a little over three minutes left in the game.
Needing a defensive stop, the Bengals could not find a way to stop Jackson, and the Ravens left with a 27-24 victory over the 0-2 Bengals, who will look for their first win of the season in a Monday night match-up against the Los Angeles Rams.

Cincinnati Bengals new starting safety Nick Scott joins us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham. This is Nick's first appearance on the show as he tells us why he chose to sign with the Bengals in the offseason and how excited he is to get the season rolling.
Nick's interview was right before the first game against the Cleveland Browns so sadly he and Lap didn't go over the disappointing loss in the season opener. Nick had a really good debut though, co-leading the team in tackles with Germaine Pratt with 11 tackles and Nick also had some nice plays in coverage. The defense overall played a solid game, forcing two turnovers and holding Deshawn Watson to only 154 passing yards. The two new safeties overall played a solid first game with Dax Hill coming up with one of those turnovers with an interception in the second half. If we know Lou Anarumo and this Bengals defense we know they will continue to get better as the season progresses.
We want to thank Nick for coming on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham brought to you by First Star Logistics and we wish him a great and healthy first season for the Cincinnati Bengals. We also look forward to growing our new central channel, First Star Media Group, and having you fans follow us along the ride. Peter King | AFC Playoff Prediction & 2023 Bengals Outlook
Friday Sep 08, 2023
Friday Sep 08, 2023
NFL writer Peter King joins us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham to talk about his AFC playoff prediction and his outlook on the 2023 Cincinnati Bengals. Peter has some bold predictions for the wild AFC this season. The AFC conference is the most loaded it has been in at least a decade with many of the top QBs in the league playing in the AFC. The Bengals are coming off two great seasons and two trips to the AFC Championship game but this year will prove to be the biggest test for the Bengals. Peter has the Bengals winning the AFC North for the third time in a row but has the Jacksonville Jaguars as the number-one seed in the AFC. It will be an exciting season, to say the least, and it all starts this Sunday when the Bengals travel to Cleveland for a huge week 1 test. We want to thank Peter for joining us before the 2023 NFL on this episode of In the Trenches with Dave Lapham brought to you by First Star Logistics. Boomer Esiason | Joe Burrow - Bengals - Ring Of Honor - AFC North & More
Thursday Sep 07, 2023
Thursday Sep 07, 2023
Who better to talk with in Week One of the NFL season than the one and only Boomer Esiason? It's always great to have the 2023 Cincinnati Bengals Ring of Honor Inductee jump In The Trenches to talk about the great game of football.
This time, Boomer talks about current quarterback Joe Burrow, who will look to guide the Bengals to their third consecutive AFC North title and long playoff run. However, Boomer stresses the AFC is full of talented quarterbacks and teams looking to knock the Bengals down a peg.
Is the AFC North the toughest division in the NFL this season? Will the Bengals get Tee Higgins and Burrow signed to new contract extensions before the season opener? If not, what risk are both players under playing without new deals?
Will it be the Browns, Steelers, or Ravens who could stand in the way of the Bengals' success?
Who will the Bengals face in their season opener? The Deshaun Watson, who was in charge of the Texans high power offense, or the quarterback who has struggled since coming off his league suspension?
Boomer opens up about what it means to have the fans select him for the Bengals Ring of Honor and more in the latest In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics.
Have you taken part in the Week One First Star Logistics Giveaway? Each week the Bengals play, you can participate in our giveaway with great prizes. Cincinnati Bengals rookie wide receiver Andrei Iosivas joins us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham. Dave and Andrei talk about the rookie's first training camp and how he is ready to roll into Week 1.
Andrei was selected by the Bengals in the 6th round in the 2023 NFL draft, and the thought process behind the pick was Andrei was just too good of an athlete to pass up. A lot of people thought Andrei was an experimental pick where he was a future project that needed a lot of development but he has proved otherwise. He has been the biggest surprise of the Bengals training camp and the preseason games with his long athletic ability and has shown he can run great routes as well. The fourth wide receiver position is Andrei's heading into the season and it will interesting to see how they use him in the offense, especially at the beginning of the season.
Andrei was an awesome guest so we hope you fans really enjoy this episode of In the Trenches with Dave Lapham brought to you by First Star Logistics. Cincinnati Bengals defense tackle DJ Reader joins us today In the Trenches with Dave Lapham. DJ tells us why he thinks the Bengals' defense is the most underrated in the NFL.
DJ is coming off two phenomenal seasons with the Bengals being their anchor on the defense line. The Bengals are a different defense when DJ is not on the field, going from one of the best defenses against the run to one of the worst. DJ is hoping to have one of the best and healthiest seasons of his career and it's not only an important season for the Bengals but also for DJ who is in the final year of his contract with the Bengals. The 2023 Bengals defense has some turnover from last season, losing both safeties in free agency and it will be the biggest question mark to start the season. DJ and the rest of the defense are very confident though saying this unit has the potential to be even better than they were in the last two seasons.
We want to thank DJ for joining us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham brought to you by First Star Logistics, as he is one of our favorite guests to talk to. We also look forward to growing our new central channel, First Star Media Group, and having you fans follow us along the ride. Cincinnati Bengals right tackle Jonah Williams joins us for a one-on-one interview on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham. Jonah joins us a week before the season to talk about the high expectations set by the team heading into this huge season for the Cincinnati Bengals.
Jonah has had an eventful offseason, to say the least. In our interview, Jonah goes into a great deal about how this offseason has been the hardest of his career. To start the offseason Jonah was rehabbing a very serious knee injury he suffered against the Ravens at the end of the season. Then after the Bengals surprisingly signed left tackle Orlando Brown Jr, Jonah didn't know what the plan was for him on the team so he thought the best decision for himself was to ask for a trade knowing that the 2023 season was his last on his current contract with the Bengals. Flash forward to training camp and Jonah has come full circle, reporting on time and accepting his new role as the right tackle for the Bengals. The vibes seem to be extremely high for this new offense line and Jonah and company can't wait to get the party started on September 10th against the Cleveland Browns.
We want to thank Jonah for joining us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham brought to you by First Star Logistics. e also look forward to growing our new central channel, First Star Media Group, and having you fans follow us along the ride. Bengals Coach Darrin Simmons | Final Bengals 2023 Preview
Friday Aug 25, 2023
Friday Aug 25, 2023
Cincinnati Bengals Special Teams Coach Darrin Simmons returns to In the Trenches with Dave Lapham to give us his final Bengals 2023 preview before the season starts on September 10th.
Coach Simmons has had an exciting training camp with the first true punter battle he has had in quite some time, with Kevin Huber being the Bengals punter for over 10 seasons. There are also battles for other spots on the special team units like gunner for the punt team and the return man for both punts and kickoffs. It will be interesting to see who makes the roster and who will just be special team players like Stanley Morgan has been for the past couple of seasons. Will an unexpected rookie not make the team because he doesn't play special teams or will a surprise undrafted player make it because he does? Everything will be answered by Tuesday when the Bengals roster is cut to 53 players right in time for the season opener against the Clevland Browns.
We hope you fans really enjoy this episode of In the Trenches with Dave Lapham brought to you by First Star Logistics and we can't wait for the season to start in just two short weeks! We also look forward to growing our new central channel, First Star Media Group, and having you fans follow us along the ride. Wednesday Aug 23, 2023
Wednesday Aug 23, 2023
Great to welcome Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Chidobe Awuzie to In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics.
Awuzie, who went down in Week Eight of last season against the Cleveland Browns with a torn ACL, is working for a possible return by Week One when the Bengals open defense of their AFC North Title on the road against the Browns.
We dig into the life journey of one of the Bengals' most profound faith-based players and talk about his life journey and football journey from high school running back with dreams of playing the position at the next level and who inspired him to when he becomes a cornerback and the coaches that helped him develop his game into an NFL second-round draft pick of the Dallas Cowboys.
Awuzie is also a top chess player and discusses how the game helps him develop his on-the-field game. He also talks about making his return this season and more in the latest episode of In The Trenches with Dave Lapham.
