Dave Lapham | Keys To Bengals Victory Over Arizona Cardinals
Friday Oct 06, 2023
Friday Oct 06, 2023
The Cincinnati Bengals head West this weekend to take on the Arizona Cardinals (1-3), with both teams looking for their second win of the season.
Does the news of Joe Burrow being removed from the Bengals Injury Report mean he'll be 100 percent capable of doing everything that makes him a special player?
Or will we see the player who struggled to leave the pocket and complete a full arsenal of throws?
Will Tee Higgins be able to play after missing practice most of this season?
This game begins a three-game stretch against NFL West teams, including the Seattle Seahawks (3-1) and San Francisco 49ers (4-0), games the Bengals will not be favored in now.
The series between the Bengals and Cardinals is tied at six games each, with the Cardinals having won the two most recent meetings.
Instead of the Bengals facing Kyler Murray at quarterback, they'll see a familiar face in Joshua Dobbs, who is playing solid football. Former Steelers running back James Conner is leading the way with 318 rushing yards, and receivers Marquise Brown and Michael Wilson have become the top two targets.
The Bengals' defense will look to rebound as well after a subpar performance against the Tennessee Titans last weekend but will need help from the offense to keep them off the field to stay fresh.
A lot is on the line in this game as the Bengals look to save the direction the season has taken so far, and Lap dives into all the critical Keys needed for the Bengals to earn their second victory of the season.

Father of The Bengals QB Jimmy Burrow joins us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham to talk about Joe Burrow's health and struggles and why this week 5 matchup against the Cardinals is a must-win.
Joe Burrow has been the biggest storyline for the Bengals in the 2023 season and for good reason. Coming into the season Joe was in the best shape of his life and ready for an MVP-caliber season but that all changed when he scrambled out of the pocket in practice and strained his calf in the process. Since then nothing has been the same for the Bengals, limping into the season by starting 0-2 and now having maybe their worst loss in three seasons against the Tennessee Titans. Now facing a must-win game on the road against the 1-3 Arizona Cardinals all of Bengals fandom is wondering will Joe Burrow be able to step up to the plate and bring home a win.
We want to thank Jimmy for coming on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham brought to you by First Star Logistics we always appreciate his time as a recurring guest! Cincinnati Bengals legendary quarterback Ken Anderson joins us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham to discuss the Bengals two new inductees into the Bengals Ring of Honor and how the Bengals can bounce back after their 1-3 start.
After the Monday night victory over the Los Angeles Rams, a lot of fans thought the Bengals were back on track but that quickly changed after Sunday's 27-3 loss against the Tennessee Titans. The drive of the game was the only bright spot for the Bengals as they drove down the field with ease and looked like the Bengals of the last two seasons but after that, it was all Tennessee. Joe and the offense couldn't get anything going after that first drive as the Titan's front seven wreaked havoc on Joe the entire game. The Bengals' defense also had one of their worst performances in recent memory giving up big play after big play which resulted in Tennessee having their best offense performance of the season. 1-3 is a bad place to be in the NFL but the Bengals have a chance to bounce back as they go on the road again to face the 1-3 Arizona Cardinals in what feels like a must-win game in Week 5.
We want to thank Ken for joining us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham brought to you by First Star Logistics. Cincinnati Bengals legendary quarterback Ken Anderson joins us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham to preview the Bengals week 4 matchup against the Tenessee Titans.
Ken and Lap dive deep into the keys to success for the Bengals as they travel on the road and face a familiar opponent in the Tennessee Titans. The Bengals are 3-0 against the Titans in the last three years including the big upset in the AFC Divisional round in the 2021 season. The Titans are never a pushover though with one of the best head coaches in the league in Mike Vrabel. The Bengals know it's going to be a hard-fought battle, especially when you are playing on the road. A lot of focus will be on Joe Burrow's health and so far this week he hasn't had any setbacks for Sunday's game as Joe looks to build off his best performance of the season last Monday night. Coach Taylor will have the boys ready to play in this huge AFC showdown where both teams look to even out their record at 2-2.
We want to thank Ken for joining us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham brought to you by First Star Logistics. Former Cincinnati Bengal Solomon Wilcots joins us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham to recap the Bengals' Monday Night Football victory against the Los Angeles Rams.
The Bengals finally earned their first win of the season on Monday night after beating the Rams 19-16. Led by an amazing defensive performance with the Bengals' defense forcing two turnovers and a total of six sacks. The defense was locked in from the very start of the game making Stafford feel uncomfortable all game. The biggest storyline heading into the game was the availability of Joe Burrow, and the decision ultimately ended up being to play Joe and it paid off massively. Joe didn't look 100 percent but he looked much better than the last two weeks and it was great to see the offense perform like they have the past two seasons. The Bengals move to 1-2 just like they did last season before winning 10 in a row on their way to an AFC Championship game appearance. They now face a familiar opponent in the Tennessee Titans whom the Bengals have beaten three times in the last three seasons.
We want to thank Solomon for coming on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham brought to you by First Star Logistics. We also look forward to growing our new central channel, First Star Media Group, and having you fans follow us along the ride. It might not have been the best-played game by a Cincinnati Bengals squad the past few seasons, but it got the job done in front of a packed Paycor Stadium in a sea of white on a night many won't forget as two Bengals' greats took their place in the Bengals Ring of Honor.
Joe Burrow toughed it out, getting a super performance from receiver Ja'Marr Chase and the tough yards and the only touchdown of the game from running back Joe Mixon. At the same time, the defense did the dirty work, putting pressure on Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford to earn their first victory of the season 19-16 over the Rams.
Following the game, Dave Lapham jumped In The Trenches, presented by First Star Logistics. He joined Dave Berk to discuss its excitement, the key developments that helped the Bengals earn their first win, and watching Chad Johnson and Boomer Esiason take their place in Bengals history.

Cincinnati Bengals assistant head coach and special teams coordinator Darrin Simmons joins us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham. Coach Simmons and Dave talk about the first two games and a preview of the Bengals Monday night matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.
While the Bengals offensively have had a rough start to the season the Bengals special teams play has been stellar. The special teams actually scored the first touchdown of the season when rookie Charlie Jones returned a punt for a touchdown in the second quarter against the Ravens. It was the first touchdown on a punt return for the Bengals since Adam Jones so it was very exciting to see and it's encouraging to see Jones make such an impact in his second career game. Brad Robbins has been up and down so far in his first two games but certain punts have definitely shown why the Bengals drafted him in the 6th round of this year's draft. Hopefully, the special teams' success continues during the season as the offense starts to come alive as well.
We want to thank Coach Simmons for always coming on with us on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham brought to you by First Star Logistics. Cincinnati Bengals linebackers coach James Bettcher joins us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham. Bettcher joined us in the show right before the week 1 game against the Browns so sadly it isn't as up-to-date as our recent content but it is a great interview about not only the Bengals underrated linebackers but the defense as a whole.

University of Connecticut head men's basketball coach Dan Hurley joins us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham. Dan is a surprise Bengals fan and he has been his whole life, he tells us how he fell in love with the Bengals as a kid and how it has grown over the years.
Dan and Lap not only talk about their love of the Bengals but Dan's love of the game of basketball. Dan's whole life has been centered around basketball with his dad, Bob Hurley winning 26 state championships at St. Anthony High School in Jersey City, New Jersey. Bob is a coaching legend in the state of New Jersey and both his sons have gone on to be great coaches of their own on the collegiate level. Dan's brother Bobby Hurley is one of the greatest point guards in Duke's history winning two national champions as a player and now has been the head coach at Arizona State since 2015. Dan while never being quite the player his brother was has proved to be a phenomenal college coach winning the national championship in 2022 and a dominant fashion as well. A four-seed coming into the tournament UCONN looked amazing in every postseason game and with the tournament filled with upsets UCONN never had a scare of their own on their way to their fifth national championship.
We want to thank Dan for joining us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham brought to you by First Star Logistics, we loved having his passionate personality on the show and hope he can join us again later on in the season!

With the Baltimore Ravens seeming to control time of possession all day Sunday afternoon in Paycor Stadium against the Cincinnati Bengals, it's hard to believe the Bengals only lost by three points, 27-24, against the AFC North rival.
Outside of some magic by rookie wide receiver Charlie Jones when he raced 81 yards on a punt return for his first NFL touchdown, things looked bleak for the home team as the Bengals offense continued their struggles from Week One.
But the Ravens didn't set the world on fire and only held a 13-10 advantage at the half after Evan McPherson and Justin Tucker traded field goals.
The tide looked to be changing for the Bengals as Joe Burrow started to find his groove, getting the Bengals in the RedZone before throwing an interception, killing the drive that Lamar Jackson turned into points, and hitting a deep pass to receiver Zay Flowers before finding his favorite receiver, tight end Mark Andrews for a touchdown and 20-10 advantage.
Burrow and the Bengals' offense would answer with a drive that included a pass interference against the Ravens, putting the Bengals on the four-yard line. After a short run by Joe Mixon and an incomplete pass to Tyler Boyd, Burrow would find Tee Higgins for the first of two touchdowns on the day, cutting the score to 20-17.
The Ravens answered with a touchdown drive in the fourth quarter, pushing the score to 27-17, and Burrow and company would put together their most impressive drive of the season, going 16 plays for 80 yards, ending in Higgins's second touchdown on the day closing the gap to 27-24 with a little over three minutes left in the game.
Needing a defensive stop, the Bengals could not find a way to stop Jackson, and the Ravens left with a 27-24 victory over the 0-2 Bengals, who will look for their first win of the season in a Monday night match-up against the Los Angeles Rams.

Cincinnati Bengals new starting safety Nick Scott joins us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham. This is Nick's first appearance on the show as he tells us why he chose to sign with the Bengals in the offseason and how excited he is to get the season rolling.
Nick's interview was right before the first game against the Cleveland Browns so sadly he and Lap didn't go over the disappointing loss in the season opener. Nick had a really good debut though, co-leading the team in tackles with Germaine Pratt with 11 tackles and Nick also had some nice plays in coverage. The defense overall played a solid game, forcing two turnovers and holding Deshawn Watson to only 154 passing yards. The two new safeties overall played a solid first game with Dax Hill coming up with one of those turnovers with an interception in the second half. If we know Lou Anarumo and this Bengals defense we know they will continue to get better as the season progresses.
We want to thank Nick for coming on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham brought to you by First Star Logistics and we wish him a great and healthy first season for the Cincinnati Bengals. We also look forward to growing our new central channel, First Star Media Group, and having you fans follow us along the ride.
