After back-to-back AFC North Divisional titles and AFC Championship Game appearances, the Cincinnati Bengals will be watching the playoffs at home this postseason.
Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo knows that his defense has seen some bright spots, with several young players taking on critical roles after the departure of a couple of top veteran performers.
While it would be easy to point fingers, Anarumo knows that will not help in the continued development of the defense as they prepare for their final game of the season in the Battle of Ohio against the Cleveland Browns. Anarumo also knows it's the NFL, and you can't go out and have errors if you expect to win games.
The veteran NFL coach returned to In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics, to discuss the failures against the Kansas City Chiefs and what lies ahead against the Browns.

The Cincinnati Bengals entered their contest against the Kansas City Chiefs with one mission. Win their ninth game of the season and keep their playoff hopes alive for another week.
Despite playing the back half of the season without Joe Burrow, the play of Jake Browning has kept playoff hopes alive. That came crashing down after a solid start in the first half that saw the Bengals keeping Patrick Mahomes in check and putting up three scores to hold a 17-7 advantage midway through the second quarter.
However, everyone has learned to refrain from counting out an Andy Reid squad with Mahomes behind center. While the Bengals held the Chiefs to only one touchdown in the first quarter of play, Mahomes put the Chiefs in position to get six field goals from Harrison Butker on their way to a 25-17 victory that sealed the Bengals fate for the season.
After calling the action on the First Star Logistics Bengals Radio Network, Dave Lapham joined Dave Berk for a postgame call on In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics, to give a quick breakdown of what happened during the game that made the difference between a win and a loss.

It's hard to believe Week 17 of the NFL season is upon us with a game many had circled as being a significant match-up with possible high seeding in the AFC playoffs on the line.
The past two seasons saw the Cincinnati Bengals and Kansas City Chiefs battle for a berth in the Super Bowl, with many feeling this regular season match-up could be a possible repeat leading into the playoffs.
Instead, Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and the Chiefs have been struggling, losing two of their past three games. In contrast, the Bengals lost Joe Burrow for the season after he nursed a calf injury early to go with weeks of solid performances and weeks where they did not play to their potential.
While Mahomes and the Chiefs look to have their playoff ticket punched, Cincinnati needs to win their final two games and hope some things happen for them to earn a berth for the third straight season in the playoffs.
In the latest Dave Lapham Keys To Bengals Victory, presented by First Star Logistics, Lap looks at what the Bengals must do for a chance to earn the first of two wins needed to keep their playoff dreams alive.

Dave Lapham In The Trenches | Eric Thomas Part 1 - Guys Can’t Get It Done

Former Pro Bowl defensive back Eric Thomas knows what he's talking about when talking about secondary play. Drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the second round of the 1987 NFL Draft, Thomas would play nine seasons in the league and record 17 career interceptions.
A member of the Bengals legendary "S.W.A.T Team," with David Fulcher, Solomon Wilcots, Lewis Billups, and Thomas.
Thomas is not afraid to speak his mind about how the Bengals are playing, and that is no different in Part One of Two with Dave Lapham In The Trenches, presented by First Star Logistics, as Thomas feels the lack of experience and injuries have hurt the Bengals performance, especially this past weekend against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
What would Thomas like to see happen going forward?
In Part One, ET talks about the overall performance against the Steelers.
You don't want to miss Part Two, when ET talks about the season's final two games as the Bengals look to rebound and keep playoff hopes alive.

The Cincinnati Bengals entered Acrisure Stadium with much to gain if they could knock off the Pittsburgh Steelers in AFC North divisional play. Instead, they got in the wrong holiday spirit, allowing Christmas to come early for the Steelers, who looked to be reeling from talk of Mike Tomlin being relieved of his duties in a few weeks as questions surrounded some player's lack of effort and injuries.
Tomlin elevated quarterback Mason Rudolph to the starting job, and receiver George Pickens went from hearing the wrath of the Steelers fan base to its shining star with two 60-plus yard touchdowns in the Steelers' 34-11 win to keep their playoff hopes alive for another week.
The Bengals would stack up yardage during the day as Jake Browning would finish 28 of 42 for 335 yards and an 80-yard touchdown pass to Tee Higgins in the third quarter. But Browning would also throw three interceptions, including one in the end zone.
The loss moves the Steelers over the Bengals in the AFC playoff standings and gives the Steelers the tiebreaker via sweeping the season series.
After the game, Dave Lapham spoke with Dave Berk for an exclusive In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics, postgame call to discuss the outcome of the game and where the Bengals go from here with two regular season games remaining.

One of the hottest stories in the NFL in the second half of the season has been the play of Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Jake Browning, who replaced Joe Burrow after he suffered a season-ending injury.
Since replacing Burrow against the Baltimore Ravens, Browning has gone 3-1 with two wins in overtime, placing the Bengals in the heat of the AFC playoff race.
Since going undrafted out of Washington, Browning spent time on the practice squads of the Minnesota Vikings and Bengals before earning the backup job this season in training camp.
This season, Browning has played in six games with four starts and shown the abilities he showed coming out of Folsom (Calif.) High School when, he was a highly rated prospect setting California and national prep records with Bengals teammate Jonah Williams.
Browning played solid in his first career start against the Steelers in a 10-16 loss but played even better in his next three starts, throwing five touchdowns with only two interceptions in wins over the Jaguars, Colts, and Vikings, the team that cut him just a few years ago.
Now, some are looking at Browning as a future starter in the league when his time in Cincinnati ends.
Until then, Browning and his girlfriend, Stephanie Niles, enjoy their time in the Queen City as family and friends travel to see Browning lead the Bengals.
In this exclusive one-on-one interview with Dave Lapham In The Trenches, presented by First Star Logistics, Browning talks about his NFL journey, prep, and college career, and play since taking over the Bengals offense. He also discusses teammate Joe Burrow's kindness in allowing his family to use his suite for home games and more.

Dave Lapham and Cincinnati Bengals fans will not soon forget the Bengals' 27-24 come-from-behind overtime victory over the Minnesota Vikings at Paycor Stadium.
While players, coaches, and fans will celebrate the win, it wasn't without losing key players on both sides of the ball, as DJ Reader went down with what looks like a season-ending injury on the Vikings' first drive of the game and cornerback DJ Ivey went down with a knee injury during a special teams play. Later in the game, standout wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase left the game and exited to the locker room only to return with his arm supported with a reported shoulder injury.
On the field, Joe Mixon may not have posted game-changing numbers, but he ruined the homecoming of Vikings rookie linebacker Ivan Pace Jr. when Pace tried to stop Mixon from reaching the end zone on a fourth-and-one at the goal line only to see the Bengals veteran show his strength and balance to score and tie the game at 17 with 7:46 remaining in the game.
On the Vikings next possession, Bengals fans thought linebacker Germaine Pratt had given the Bengals an even bigger play with an interception he returned for a 44-yard touchdown. However, defensive end Trey Hendrickson would be called offsides, and five plays later, the Vikings would take a 24-17 lead.
The vocal crowd at Paycor Stadium was full-throat, and on the Bengals ninth drive of the game, they would see a play fans won't soon forget as Jake Browning would throw it up to Tee Higgins who high-pointed the ball coming down just short of the goal line before putting a move out of nowhere that saw him swing his right hand with the ball over the pylon leading to an Evan McPherson extra point to tie the game at 24 each with 39 second left in regulation.
After the Vikings lost the toss in overtime, the Bengals went three and out, giving the Vikings a chance to win the game on their drive. However, even without Reader, the defensive front showed up on back-to-back plays stopping the Vikings on two quarterback keepers and taking over the ball on the 41-yard line.
Browning would find another magic moment when he was chased out of the pocket and hit Tyler Boyd, who would get needed yards after the catch to the 13-yard line and after a Mixon run and Browning taking a knee, McPherson would seal the victory with a 29-yard field goal giving the Bengals their third straight win, with two of them coming in overtime to move to 8-6 and into a more positive position for a possible playoff berth with three big games remaining against the Steelers, Chiefs, and Browns to finish out the season.
Dave Lapham joined Dave Berk following the game to discuss the highs and lows of the game, injuries, and more on In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics.
