Bengals Special Teams Coach Darrin Simmons | Special Teams Will Be Better in 2023
Cincinnati Bengals special teams coordinator Darrin Simmons returns to In the Trenches with Dave Lapham to preview the new NFL rules and the 2023 Bengals special teams. It seems like every season the NFL applies new rules and this year is no different. Coach Simmons and Lap talk about a few of the new changes and most importantly one that drastically affects the kickoff. The rule is a lot like the college rule where you can now fair catch a kickoff anywhere on the field and it is an automatic touchback. The NFL is making this rule in an attempt to make the kickoff safer but it always takes a lot of strategy and gameplay out of the kickoff. Let's just say Coach Simmons isn't the biggest fan of this new rule change that essentially expels the pooch kick. Lap and Coach Simmons also talk about the upcoming postitons battle that will be determined in training camp most notably the punter battle. Simmons is also excited to see how these rookies will perform and how he can use their athleticism on the field.
